American author was born on June 22nd, 1947. Science fiction stories and fairy tales hooked her to reading and writing, even after her well-intentioned aunt Hazel said: “Honey…Negroes can’t be writers.” Parable of the Sower is the first in a two-book series.

Written as an apocalypse science fiction novel, Parable of the Sower provides commentary on climate change and social inequality. Octavia E. Butler won a college-wide short-story contest, earning her first income ($15) as a writer and taught writer’s workshops in the Los Angeles area before publishing Parable of the Sower in 1993. Her work is now taught in over 200 colleges and universities nationwide.

Octavia Butler influenced a collection of 20 short stories and essays about social justice in by young authors Adrienne Maree Brown and Walidah Imarisha.
